Does Installing An Ignition Interlock Reduce Your Insurance Rates?

Here’s a question I often get asked:

When you install an ignition interlock in your car, does that help your insurance rates?

The answer is no, unfortunately; it does not help your rates.

In Ontario, after an alcohol conviction like impaired driving or over .08, you get a license suspension, followed by a requirement to install an ignition interlock in your car for a certain time period, usually one year.

The conviction affects your rates, the interlock device does not

The actual conviction and license suspension does affect your rates, whereas having the device installed does not.

Nevertheless, having an alcohol conviction on your record often does not affect your insurance rates as much as many people expect it to. That’s why it’s best to call me for a quote.
